Scholarly Communication: Author Metrics

Information on Avondale reportable publications.

Author Metrics

Citation metrics are indices that demonstrate the uptake and impact of research.  There are a number of differing types of indices that can be used to form a picture of your impact story and these will vary depending on your type of research. The metrics are used both to inform university evaluative frameworks and are also a part of the authors unique impact.

Types of Author-level Metrics

The below table lists a selection of author-level metrics, a brief description and how to access them. Avondale does not have access to SciVal, InCites or SSRN. Avondale researchers can contact Avondale's Research Services team to access such metrics.

Metric Description Field Weighted
h-index

Indicates the number of articles (h) that have been cited at least (h) number of times. e.g. A researcher with an h-index of 10 has published 10 articles that have been cited at least 10 times each.

This type of metric can be accessed via Google Scholar Citations
No
Field Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) The ratio of citations received relative to the expected world average.   A field-weighted citation impact of 1 indicates the expected global average number of citations received.  More than 1 indicates the expected global average has been exceeded, and less than 1 shows the expected global average has not been met.  Yes
Category Normalised Citation Impact (CNCI)

Calculated by dividing the actual count of citing items by the expected citation rate for documents with the same document type, year of publication and subject area.

A CNCI of 1 represents performance at par with world average, values above 1 are considered above average and values below 1 are considered below average. This can be accessed via SciVal
Yes
Citations per publication The number of citations received by an entity, divided by the number of publications produced by the entity.  Also known as 'Citation impact' in InCites. No
Author Level Eigenfactor

A weighted measure based on an author's citations, excluding self-citations. It adjusts for the number of authors of the paper, the number of outgoing citations from each paper citing an author's paper and for the importance of the citing paper.

The Social Science Research Network (SSRN) score is calculated from SSRN citation data only
Yes

Plum X Metrics is the primary source of article-level metrics alongside Scopus citation count and Field-Weighted Citation Impact  (FWCI) previously mentioned.

Plum X metrics are divided into five categories - Usage, Captures, Mentions, Social Media, and Citations which can all be accessed using your DigitalCommons Author Dashboard, and visible on article pages on Avondale's Institutional Repository, Avondale Research

Please note that from August 31, 2023 Twitter data will no longer be accessible via Plum prints on Avondale's Institutional Repository.

Viewing Metrics on Article Pages

When browsing Avondale's repository, PlumX Metrics display on Digital Commons article pages in a widget called the Plum Print.

The Plum Print is dynamic. Each color circle in the Plum Print represents the relative amount of activity in the associated category. The larger the circle, the more metrics in that category. For instance, this Plum Print has greater social media activity than other categories:

When you roll over the Plum Print, more about the activity in each category is visible.
