Research Support

Choosing the right journal or publisher and understanding your rights as an author are crucial steps in the publication process.

  • Selecting a Reputable Publisher: Look for journals with peer-reviewed articles, clear editorial policies, and established credibility in your field. Tools like the various publisher Journal Locators can help you identify suitable, reliable journals.
  • Transformative Agreements: Avondale University participates in transformative (Read & Publish) agreements, allowing affiliated researchers to publish OA in select journals without individual APCs. Check with the library for details on eligible journals and publishers.
  • Avoiding Predatory PublishersThink. Check. Submit. can help you identify trusted publishers for your research.
  • Author Rights and Copyright: Review your rights in your publishing agreement. Some agreements may restrict your ability to share or reuse your work. The library can help you understand your rights and negotiate terms that allow you future access and use of your research.

For guidance on selecting a journal or understanding author rights, please book a consultation with a librarian.

Accurate and timely reporting of research publications is essential for ensuring your work contributes to institutional goals, national research assessments, and global research priorities.

  • Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA): ERA is a national research evaluation framework that assesses the quality and impact of Australian research. Reporting publications for ERA involves meeting specific criteria for research quality, originality, and significance. By accurately reporting your publications to Avondale, you contribute to Avondale’s research profile in ERA assessments, helping to demonstrate the university’s impact and influence within the academic community.
  • Field of Research (FoR) and Field of Education (FoE) Codes: The Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC) system uses FoR and FoE codes to categorise research outputs by discipline and educational focus. When reporting your publications, include the relevant FoR and FoE codes to ensure your research is accurately classified. This classification enhances the discoverability of your work within specific fields and disciplines, facilitating collaborations and enabling accurate reporting in national and institutional records.
  • Alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Including SDG alignment in your reporting can open up opportunities for collaborations and increase the potential reach and application of your research findings.

Open access (OA) publishing makes your research freely available to a global audience, increasing its reach and impact. Avondale researchers are encouraged to use the Directory of Open Access Journals and Directory of Open Access Books to locate reputable OA journals and books.

Avondale University encourages open scholarship to promote transparency, equity, and accessibility in research.

  • Types of Open Access:
    • Gold Open Access: The final published article is freely accessible on the publisher’s website. Often involves an Article Processing Charge (APC).
    • Green Open Access: A version of the article (usually the accepted manuscript) is deposited in an institutional repository, such as ACORA, for open access.
    • Hybrid Open Access: Some subscription-based journals allow authors to pay an APC to make specific articles openly accessible.
  • Transformative Agreements: Avondale University participates in transformative (Read & Publish) agreements, allowing affiliated researchers to publish OA in select journals without individual APCs. Check with the library for details on eligible journals and publishers.
  • Depositing in ACORA: Regardless of where you publish, depositing your work in ACORA enhances its visibility and long-term accessibility. ACORA also complies with funder mandates for open access.
