STEM: Sphero

Sphero BOLT is a programmable robot ball that you can drive and code, providing endless opportunities for students to be creative and have fun while developing fundamental STEM skills. When used in a STEM curriculum, this educational robotics kit lets students learn programming skills, complete hands-on activities, and share their creations with the classroom.

Pros

  • Students who aren't normally into science or math can get hooked by programming Sphero to paint a beautiful picture or have a dance party.
  • Sphero Edu instigates friendly competition as kids challenge each other to build mazes or obstacle courses for the robot to navigate.
  • Very durable and waterproof
  • Easy to use app interface
  • Genuinely makes learning fun

Teaching Suggestions

Check out the links and do not limit yourself to using Sphero just in maths or science classes. There is potential for Sphero to be used across all curriculum areas, the sky is the limit!

 

Cons

  • There's definitely a learning curve to using this device; kids may get frustrated if their program doesn't work right away because the ball is slipping on certain types of surfaces.
  • Sphero robot does not move that well on grass.
  • Can’t use the SPRK+ with other Sphero apps
  • One hour battery could be improved upon
