Top Tips for Publishing

  • TIME: the publishing process takes time from - research, writing, identification of place for publication, submission, review, and finally publishing
  • Determine your target audience
  • Ask colleagues and supervisors for recommendations based on their discipline expertise and experience
  • Determine where well-known scholars in your field are publishing
  • Check the aims, objectives and scope of a journal, and follow the instructions to authors
  • Consistently publish using the same version of your name and sign up for a unique author identifier via ORCiD
  • Whilst at Avondale University, list your affiliation as Avondale University in full. You can also include the name of an associated research centre.
  • Critically evaluate potential impact, reputation and reach before you submit your work
  • Co-author with a recognised researcher to develop a publishing track record in your field (discuss with your supervisor if undertaking a research degree)
  • Cite the journals you want to publish in
  • THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX and look at other engagement options such as: BOOK CHAPTERS, EDITING & REVIEWING, CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS
  • Familiarise yourself with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research

Find a journal with a title/abstract search

You can use the title/abstract of your research to help identify a suitable journal

  • Jane (Journal/Author Name Estimator).  This tool uses Pubmed database to find journals that are most suitable, the tool is helpful to researchers in Health Sciences, Psychology and Medicine.
  • Elsevier Journal Finder  This tool is suitable to a broad range of disciplines and will help you find a journal to match your research.
  • SpringerNature Journal Suggestor.  This tool will assist in finding a match for Science and Humanities.
  • Endnote 20 Manuscript Matcher: will search based on your citation, watch the video to see how.
